The Bloody Mary Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi) is prized for its intense, deep crimson coloration. Unlike standard Red Cherry Shrimp, whose pigment sits primarily on the shell, Bloody Marys are selectively bred to have deep red tissue (flesh), giving them a richer, redder appearance that is unmatched in depth and saturation. They grow up to 3 cm long and are tireless workers, spending their days meticulously cleaning algae on every surface in the aquarium.
While you can keep a few as scavengers, we strongly suggest buying a group of 10–15 shrimps to establish a healthy colony. They are social creatures and feel most secure when there are more of them. They are remarkably hardy and can handle a wide range of water conditions, thriving in a pH of 6.5–8.0. They especially appreciate moderate to hard water (GH), which provides the essential minerals they need for successful molting and shell growth.
Care must be taken with tank mates, avoid any large or aggressive fish with Bloody Mary Shrimp. A bonus, as omnivorous scavengers, they are not picky eaters! Their favorite meals include biofilm, specialized shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables like baby marrow.
