The Bristlenose Ancistrus pleco (Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus) is widely considered the one of the best of algae eaters for the home aquarium. This fish has a dark, olive-brown body decorated with fine, pale speckles, making it a master of camouflage that blends perfectly into driftwood and rocky crevices. Unlike the common pleco these only grow to a manageable 10–12 cm.

The males of this species have “bristles” that sprout from the snout. They are exceptionally peaceful and generally ignore all other tank mates, including delicate species like Pygmy Corydoras and shrimp. They are most comfortable in a pH of 6.5–7.5 and can tolerate a range of temperatures.

Bristlenose Pleco needs a tank with natural driftwood, which provides both a secure hiding spot and a source of essential dietary lignin.  For long-term health, their diet should be varied with sinking algae wafers, bottom-feeder pellets, and fresh veggie slices.
