Hillstream Loach

The Hillstream Loach (Sewellia lineolata), also known as the Reticulated Hillstream Loach, is one of the most fascinating fish.Looking more like a miniature freshwater ray or a flat shark than a typical loach, they feature a stunning dark-and-gold reticulated (net-like) pattern across their aerodynamic bodies. Growing up to 6 cm, they use their specialized fins as suction cups to cling to rocks and glass, perfectly adapted for life in the fast-moving, oxygen-rich streams of Vietnam.

We strongly suggest keeping them in a group of 3–5 or more. They are socially complex and engage in harmless “fluttering” battles for the best grazing spots on rocks, which is one of the most entertaining behaviors to watch. Hillstream Loaches have specific needs: they require a pH of 6.0–7.5 and, most importantly,high oxygen levels and cool, moving water They are the perfect choice for a river setup or any tank with a strong filter output. Also be careful of high Nitrates, Hillstream Loaches don’t like high NO3 levels!

These loaches are peaceful and make excellent tank mates for white cloud mountain minnows, shrimp, and other cool-water species. Because they are specialized “periphyton” grazers, their aquarium should have smooth river stones and plenty of light to encourage natural biofilm growth. Their favourite meals include algae wafers, high-quality sinking pellets, and frozen bloodworms.
