The Peppered Cory (Corydoras paleatus) is one of the most beloved species in the aquarium hobby. They are easily recognised by their charming, mottled pattern. Growing up to 7 cm, they are slightly larger and more robust than many other Cory species.

The recommendation for these social bottom-dwellers is a group of at least six, but preferably 8–10. Peppered Corys are bold and sturdy, handling a wide range of water conditions with ease. They thrive in a pH of 6.0–7.5 and are particularly notable for their ability to flourish in slightly cooler water than most tropical fish, making them perfect for unheated indoor tanks or temperate community setups.

Because they spend their time on the substrate, it is vital to provide sand or very smooth gravel to protect their sensitive barbels (whiskers) from damage. Our locally bred Peppered Corys are particularly hardy, as they are raised in local tap water at temperatures around 24°C. They make excellent tank mates for species like Discus and Sterbai Corys. Their favourite meals include sinking catfish wafers, frozen bloodworms, and brine shrimp, which they will enthusiastically dig for with their snouts.

Quick Care Tips

  • Social: Keep in groups of six or more. These “Peppered Corys” are highly social and are most active when they feel the safety and security of a larger shoal.
  • Environment: They prefer tanks with plenty of hiding places, such as smooth driftwood, caves, and broad-leafed plants. A soft sand substrate is highly recommended to protect their sensitive barbels.
  • Diet: As omnivorous scavengers, they should be fed high-quality sinking pellets. Supplement their diet with frozen proteins like bloodworms or brine shrimp to ensure optimal health.
