The Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is an icon of the tropical aquarium, known for its neon-blue and deep-red horizontal stripes that run the full length of its body. Growing up to 4 cm, they are slightly larger and more intensely coloured than their famous relative, the Neon Tetra. Native to South America, these shimmering beauties stand out in the dim, tea-coloured waters of the flooded rainforest.

While the standard rule for schooling fish is six, we strongly recommend a group of 10–15 Cardinals to see them at their best. They are peaceful but can be slightly more sensitive to water quality than average. They thrive in a pH range of 5.0–7.0 and prefer soft, warm water. To truly see them glow, provide an environment with plenty of driftwood, tannins, and low-to-moderate lighting.

As peaceful community fish, avoid housing them with large or predatory fish that could consider them food. As mid-water swimmers, they are enthusiastic eaters but have relatively small mouths. Their favourite meals include high-quality crushed flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen treats like daphnia and baby brine shrimp.

Quick Care Tips

  • Social: Keep Cardinal Tetras in groups of ten or more. They are highly social shoaling fish and feel most secure—and display their best colours—when kept in a large school.
  • Environment: They flourish in heavily planted tanks with floating cover to diffuse light. They are particularly suited to blackwater setups where tannins mimic their natural habitat.
  • Diet: Provide a varied diet of high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and vibrancy-enhancing foods. Supplement with frozen treats like daphnia or baby brine shrimp for optimal health.
