The Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is one of the most famous tropical fish in the world, iconic for its electric blue horizontal stripe that seems to “glow” against a contrasting red tail and silver underbelly. Growing to an average of 3 cm, these small fish have been an aquarium staple for decades. Native to South America, they have evolved to stand out in the shadows of the Amazonian rainforest canopy.
We strongly recommend a school of 10–15 Neon Tetras. In larger numbers, they feel secure and exhibit tight-schooling behavior, moving as a single shimmering unit. They are generally hardy but prefer stable water conditions with a pH between 6.0–7.0. They appreciate soft water and plenty of hiding spots among plants and driftwood.
They are a peaceful community species, avoid housing them with large, predatory fish as Neons are a natural prey species in the wild. Since they are active mid-water swimmers, they do best with small flakes and micro-pellets. Treat them to frozen daphnia, baby brine shrimp, or tubifex worms.
