Everything you need to know about buying live fish and shrimp online in South Africa, from water parameters and tank compatibility to shipping, DOA claims, and wholesale pricing. We’ve answered the most common questions – including the ones about what Discus actually need to thrive. If your question isn’t here, contact us directly at info@silverst.co.za or reach Nelize for Discus-specific queries at discusdivana@gmail.com.
Yes, but visits are strictly by appointment. This is a working hatchery and biosecurity is taken seriously – unannounced visitors introduce risk to the fish. Contact us to book a time: info@silverst.co.za or +27 71 641 2937.
Browse the shop, add items to your cart, and check out securely via PayFast. You can pay by card or EFT. Once payment is confirmed, you’ll receive an order confirmation email and we’ll be in touch about your dispatch date.
We accept card payments and EFT through PayFast and InstantEFT. Cash and direct EFT are accepted for collection orders from our Pretoria East hatchery by appointment.
All imported livestock is covered by our 24-hour Arrive Alive Guarantee. If any fish or shrimp arrives dead, photograph it inside the original unopened bag and contact us within 24 hours of delivery. We’ll process a refund or store credit – no arguments. See our full policy page for complete details
Yes, collection from our Pretoria East hatchery is available by appointment only. For Discus fish over 10cm, this is also the only available option. Contact us to arrange a time: info@silverst.co.za or +27 71 641 2937.
Yes, we ship to all major and most smaller centres across South Africa via courier. Discus fish are preferably sent by air freight to other provinces rather than road courier – this keeps transit stress to a minimum and is better for the fish.
Dry goods typically arrive within 1–3 business days. Livestock shipping is scheduled between every Monday – Wednesday to make sure fish travel as safely, stress-free and quickly as possible. We’ll confirm your dispatch date when your order is ready.
Fish and shrimp are packed in oxygen-filled bags with appropriate water volume, placed in insulated boxes to maintain temperature. We pack to the standard used for air freight – the same method used for internationally imported livestock.
No. We do not ship any Discus fish larger than 10cm. The physiological stress of bagging and transit increases significantly with size, and the risk of loss is too high for us to justify it. Larger specimens are available for collection from our Pretoria East hatchery by appointment only.
Don’t open the bag. Photograph the dead fish clearly inside the sealed, unopened bag and send the photo to info@silverst.co.za with your order number within 24 hours of delivery. Claims cannot be processed without this photograph or after the 24-hour window has passed.
Photograph everything before opening it! The box, the damage, and the contents. Contact us immediately. We are not liable for damage caused by the courier once a package leaves our facility, but we will open a formal claim with the carrier on your behalf and follow it through.
Both. Discus Divana breeds locally – Nelize has been breeding Discus since 2015 and her locally bred juveniles are available regularly. We also import select strains and quarantine them for a minimum of two weeks before listing them for sale.
Discus thrive in soft, slightly acidic, warm water. Aim for a pH of 6.0–7.0, temperature of 28–30°C, low hardness (GH below 8), and low nitrates. South African tap water is generally harder than ideal, so many Discus keepers use an RO unit or blend RO with tap. Contact Nelize at discusdivana@gmail.com for specific guidance, she’s happy to help.
Yes, but carefully. Good Discus tank mates include Cardinal Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras, small Corydoras, and Rams. Avoid anything nippy, overly active, or that prefers cooler water. Threadfin and Forktail Rainbowfish, for example, prefer 23–26°C – too cool for Discus tanks.
Yes. This is something Nelize specialises in. She has extensive knowledge of Discus biology, pharmaceutical treatments, and homeopathic approaches to common ailments including gill flukes, Hexamita, skin parasites, and bacterial infections. Email discusdivana@gmail.com with details and photos of your fish and she’ll do her best to help
We breed multiple colours of Neocaridina shrimp – including Red Cherry (Supreme Red), Bloody Mary, Blue Dream, Yellow 24K, Black Chocolate, and Orange Sakura. We also stock Amano shrimp and Yellow Cherry variants. Caridina species including Crystal Red and Taiwan Bee are available seasonally — check the shop or contact us for current stock.
Our Neocaridina shrimp are kept at a TDS of 180–220 at 22°C – close to typical South African tap water conditions. This makes acclimation straightforward for most South African keepers. Caridina shrimp are more demanding and require softer, more acidic water – typically RO remineralised with Salty Shrimp GH+ or similar.
Neocaridina shrimp (like Cherry Shrimp and Blue Dreams) are beginner-friendly, tolerant of a wider range of water parameters, and breed readily in most South African tap water. Caridina shrimp (like Crystal Red and Taiwan Bee) are more sensitive, require softer acidic water, and are generally considered intermediate to advanced. Both are beautiful – choose based on your tank setup.
