The Rainbow Shark (Epalzeorhynchos frenatum) is a dynamic and visually stunning addition to the larger community aquarium, famous for its sleek, dark-grey body and red fins. Reaching an adult size of 12–15 cm, this active bottom-dweller possesses a shark-like silhouette. Native to the river basins of Southeast Asia, they are known for their striking colouration.
Provide plenty of horizontal space and hiding spots. We strongly suggest a tank of at least 200 litres to manage their territorial nature.Tthe Rainbow Shark is solitary and will chase away other sharks or similar-looking species that enter its “zone.” They thrive in well-oxygenated water with a pH of 6.5–7.5 and prefer a setup with a moderate current, mimicking the flowing rivers of their natural habitat.
Avoid housing them with other “sharks” or timid bottom-dwellers like Corys, as the Rainbow Shark may bully them for territory. Since they are opportunistic omnivores, try feeding a variety of sinking pellets and algae wafers. Their favourite meals include frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetable-based flakes, which help maintain the intense red pigmentation of their fins.
