The Spotted Leopard Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus) is admired for it’s spotted pattern. They display a vibrant pattern of deep ruby-red or burgundy spots tightly packed over a shimmering, metallic turquoise-blue background. Unlike albino lines, the Spotted Leopard retains the dramatic dark vertical stress bars and dark-rimmed fins that showcase its natural ancestry, but with a heavily maximized, high-contrast spotted coverage.
Your Spotted Leopard Discus should be kept in groups of least six to manage their natural hierarchy, but we strongly suggest a group of 8–10 Discus to keep them feeling safe and confident. They require a stable pH of 6.0–7.0 and very warm, pristine water (28°C–30°C) to stay healthy. Good water quality is non-negotiable.They are sensitive to nitrates, frequent water changes are essential to keep their colors vibrant and their immune systems strong.
When choosing tankmates, avoid boisterous or nippy species that might disturb with their calm nature or outcompete them for resources. Because they are deliberate, slow eaters, they do best with food that settles slowly or rests on clean surfaces. Their favourite meals include high-quality beef heart, frozen bloodworms, enriched brine shrimp, and specialised slow-sinking discus granules.
