The Sterbai Corydoras (Corydoras sterbai) is one of the most beloved bottom-dwellers in the aquarium hobby, famous for its striking “salt and pepper” pattern of white spots on a dark body and its brilliant orange pectoral fins. They grow up to 6.5 cm long and possess the classic, armoured appearance of the Callichthyidae family. Native to South America, they thrive in warmer temperatures that would stress other Cory species.
While you can keep a minimum of six, we strongly suggest a group of 8–12 Sterbai Corys to see their most natural behaviour. They are quite hardy and can adapt to a pH range of 6.0–7.6, but they truly flourish in soft to moderate water hardness. Because they are native to warmer regions, they are the perfect companions for high-temperature tanks. Our juveniles are 2.5 cm on average and are imported from trusted farms.
The Sterbai is the most heat-tolerant of the Corydoras types, making it a classic and semi-hardy choice for the community tank. Avoid housing them with aggressive bottom-dwellers or fish large enough to swallow them, as they are peaceful and non-confrontational. Since they spend their time sifting through the substrate, ensure you provide high-quality sinking foods that reach the bottom. Their favourite meals include sinking catfish pellets, frozen bloodworms, and live blackworms or tubifex.
