The Dwarf Neon Rainbow Fish (Melanotaenia praecox) is a breathtaking species that truly lives up to its name. Unlike many rainbowfish that grow too large for the average home aquarium, the M. praecox reaches a manageable 7 cm adult size. Their bodies are covered in large, iridescent scales that reflect light in a brilliant metallic blue, beautifully contrasted by vivid red or orange fins.

These incredibly active fish bring a sense of constant movement to the middle and upper layers of the aquarium. They should ideally be kept in a school of at least six to ten Dwarf Neon Rainbow fish to ensure they feel secure and display their best colours. They are exceptionally peaceful and make ideal tank mates for other active community species.

Dwarf Neon Rainbow Fish do best in a well-oxygenated tank with a moderate current and plenty of open swimming space to accommodate their high-energy nature. They are hardy eaters and thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flakes, small pellets, and frozen treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp. Because they are so active, they have a slightly higher metabolism than many other community fish, so frequent small feedings will help keep them healthy, vibrant, and full of life.

Quick Care Tips

  • Social: Keep in groups of six or more. Aim for a mix of males and females, as the males will display their brightest neon-blue colours and shimmering scales when competing for the attention of females.
  • Environment: They prefer heavily planted borders with plenty of open swimming space in the centre. These are high-energy fish that require horizontal room to accommodate their fast-swimming nature.
  • Diet: Feed a variety of high-protein flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp. While active, they prefer feeding from the water surface or mid-column.
