Pea puffers (Carinotetraodon travancoricus), also known as “dwarf puffers,” are small, freshwater fish that are popular for their quirky behavior and vibrant appearance.
I’ve kept pea puffers successfully with guppies, other nano fishes and bumblebee gobies and large snails, but Pea puffers are best kept alone or with very peaceful, small tankmates that won’t stress them. Avoid housing them with larger or aggressive species. Other small species like snails or shrimp can sometimes make good tankmates, but be cautious of overpopulation.
They enjoy plants, driftwood, and rocks that provide hiding spots. Soft plants, like Java moss or Java ferns, are ideal. Ensure there are plenty of places for the fish to hide from each other, especially if you keep multiple pea puffers.
Pea puffers are primarily carnivorous and need a varied diet. Offer a mix of high-quality foods like live or frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and small snails. They love to hunt, so live food is excellent for stimulating their natural behaviour.
Pea puffers need clean, well-filtered water, but they are sensitive to strong currents.
