Red Shrimp Culls (Neocaridina davidi) are an excellent entry point into the world of dwarf shrimp, hand-sorted from our breeding colonies and priced to make shrimp-keeping accessible without compromising on health. The body carries visible red colouring with transparent legs, and while coverage may be lighter or less uniform than our higher-grade reds, they’re lively, healthy, and every bit as entertaining to keep. Ours range from 1–1.5 cm at time of sale.
Being Neocaridina, they’re among the most adaptable shrimp in the hobby. We keep ours at a TDS of 180–220 and 22°C, fully conditioned to South African tap water conditions. A starting group of at least ten makes them feel secure, brings out natural foraging behavior, and gives you a far better visual impact across the tank.
Avoid any fish large enough to view them as a meal – they’re best in a shrimp-only setup or alongside very small, peaceful species. As natural scavengers they’ll graze biofilm and algae constantly, supplemented with sinking algae wafers, specialised shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and leaf litter. A great way to start your shrimp colony in South Africa without breaking the bank.
