The Amano Shrimp (Caridina multidentata), formerly known as Caridina japonica, is a translucent invertebrate with a distinctive line of broken reddish-brown dots along their sides that can grow up to 5 cm  long. Unlike smaller dwarf shrimp, they are robust, active, and famous for their ability to munch massive amounts of hair algae and brush algae.

Keep them in small groups, we strongly suggest buying 5–10 Amano Shrimp depending on your tank size, as they are much more effective and visible when they work as a team. They are remarkably hardy and can handle a wide range of water parameters, with a pH of 6.5–8.0 and a preference for moderately hard water which helps them develop strong shells.

Avoid any large or predatory fish for tankmates. While Amano Shrimp spend most of their time scavenging the substrate and ornaments for algae, they are also enthusiastic opportunistic feeders. Their favourite meals include algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and sinking pellets. Amano Shrimp are notorious “escape artists.” Ensure your aquarium has a tight-fitting lid, as they are surprisingly good at climbing out of the water if they find an opening. Imported from Indonesia and Singapore. Enquire for exact sizes available.

Quick Care Tips

  • Social: Keep Amano Shrimp in groups of five or more. They are far more active and bold when they have others of their kind nearby to interact with.
  • Environment: Provide plenty of aquatic moss and driftwood. These surfaces collect the biofilm and algae that Amano shrimp love to graze on throughout the day.
  • Diet: As omnivorous scavengers and world-class algae eaters, they still require supplemental calcium-rich sinking pellets to support healthy shell development and successful moulting.
