The Tri-Colour Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) is a vibrant and highly distinctive variety characterised by its mottled pattern of black, white, and brilliant orange or gold. Reaching a vertical height of up to 20 cm, these elegant cichlids are native to the Amazon River basin. They bring a bold, painted aesthetic to the mid-to-upper levels of the aquarium and are known for their intelligent, curious personalities.
Provide a tall aquarium for your Tri-Colour Angelfish to accommodate their long, trailing fins. We strongly suggest a tank of at least 115–150 litres for a single pair. While they are relatively peaceful community members when young, they can become territorial as they mature, especially when breeding. They thrive in warm, stable water with a pH of 6.5–7.5 and appreciate an environment with plenty of vertical structures like tall driftwood and broad-leaved plants.
Avoid housing them with fin-nippers or very small fish that they might start to think of eating as they grow. Since they are mid-water feeders, feed flakes or slow-sinking granules. Their favourite meals include frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp, which help support their growth.
