The Cobalt Blue Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus) is an iconic and mesmerizing variety, with a deep, rich metallic blue body that is often highlighted by subtle, intricate striations running through its fins and face. Originally derived from the warm, tranquil tributaries of the Amazon River Basin, this premium strain adds an unforgettable, graceful presence to the mid-water levels of large, mature display aquariums.
They must never be kept alone, so we strongly suggest purchasing a group of at least 5–6 individuals to encourage natural schooling behaviour and reduce stress. They require a good standard of water cleanliness, thriving in warm, soft, and slightly acidic conditions with a stable pH of 6.0–7.0. Because they are sensitive to accumulating waste, a good filtration system paired with routine, large water changes is essential to support their growth and maintain their striking coloration.
Avoid housing them with fast, hyperactive tank mates or aggressive fin-nippers which can easily stress them or outcompete them during mealtime. Since they are slow, meticulous feeders that like to examine their food, feed protein sinking granules or specialised discus pellets. Their favourite meals include frozen beef heart, clean bloodworms, and nutrient-packed brine shrimp.
