The Ember Tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae) is a vibrant, flame-colored jewel that has become a favorite for aquascapers and nano-tank enthusiasts alike. These tiny fish grow to about 2cm and have translucent, fiery orange-to-red bodies. Originally discovered in Brazil, they inhabit slow-moving “blackwater” areas filled with leaf litter and tangled roots, which makes them feel right at home in any tank with natural décor.

While you can keep a small school of six, we strongly recommend a group of 10–15 Ember Tetras to see their best colors and tight schooling behavior. They are quite hardy and thrive in a pH range of 6.0–7.5, preferring soft to slightly moderate water hardness.

As peaceful community fish, avoid housing them with large, boisterous, or predatory fish that could easily swallow them. Since they are mid-water swimmers with very small mouths, they require tiny foods that stay suspended in the water column. Their favorite meals include crushed high-quality flakes, baby brine shrimp, and micro-pellets.

Quick Care Tips

  • Social: Keep Ember Tetras in groups of ten or more. These tiny tetras are much more confident and display their deepest orange hues when kept in a large, secure shoal.
  • Environment: They thrive in heavily planted tanks, especially blackwater setups with driftwood and dried leaf litter. Tannins in the water help mimic their natural habitat and make their colours pop.
  • Diet: Provide tiny micro-foods. Because they have exceptionally small mouths, ensure any dry food is crushed into a fine powder or small granules, supplemented by live or frozen baby brine shrimp.
