The Red and blue Half-moon Betta Fish (Betta splendens) is distinguished by its contrasting velvety white, almost painted looking body and bright red tail and fins that fan out to a full 180 degrees. Reaching an adult size of 6–7 cm,  Originally from the shallow, warm waters of Southeast Asia, they bring a visually engaging element to the mid-to-upper levels of the aquarium.

The Red and blue Half-moon Betta Fish are best kept alone, but we strongly recommend a tank of at least 20 litres with a low-flow filter to protect their delicate, heavy fins. They are often sold in small bowls, but they actually need a heated and filtered environment to stay healthy and active. They are hardy and can handle a pH range of 6.5–7.5, but they truly thrive in warm, stable conditions.

Avoid housing your Red and blue half-moon betta fish with any tank mates that are nippy, which may damage the Betta’s spectacular tail. Since they are surface-oriented insectivores with a labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe air, feed floating pellets that won’t sink too quickly. Their favourite meals include frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.

Quick Care Tips

  • Social: The males are territorial and need to be kept by themselves to prevent fighting. They can sometimes live with peaceful, short-finned companions.
  • Plants: These bettas enjoy resting near the surface. Broad-leaved plants like Anubias or Amazon Swords provide the perfect “hammock” for them.
  • Diet: Feed your betta pellets and frozen or live treats like bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp to maintain their vibrant colours.
