The Blue Diamond Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus) is a breathtaking showpiece of the aquatic world, with shimmering iridescent blue coloration that lacks any vertical bars or striping. Originally stemming from the warm, slow-moving floodplains of the Amazon River Basin, this selectively bred variety brings an unmatched, graceful elegance to the mid-to-lower levels of a large display tank.
These sophisticated fish are social creatures that must be kept in groups, so we strongly suggest buying a school of at least 5–6 Discus of similar size to establish a natural hierarchy and reduce stress. They require pristine, stable water conditions and thrive best in warm, soft, and slightly acidic water with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Because they are sensitive to fluctuating parameters, large regular water changes and a high-quality filtration system are essential to maintain their vibrant health.
Avoid housing them with fast-moving, boisterous tank mates or hyperactive competitors that might outcompete them for food or nip at them. Since they are slow, deliberate mid-water feeders, try feeding high-protein granules or slow-sinking flakes that give them time to graze. Their favourite meals include frozen beef heart mixes, bloodworms, and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp.
