The Blue Phantom Pleco (Hemiancistrus subviridis) is spectacular and highly sought-after, known for its mesmerising deep blue-to-teal body covered in light spots. Growing up to 18 cm long, they are a standout bottom-dweller for any medium to large aquarium. These striking plecos come from the fast-flowing, oxygen-rich waters of the Orinoco River in South America, where they spend their time tucked among rocky crevices.

Provide a “river-style” setup with high water flow and plenty of oxygenation to mimic their natural habitat. While Blue Phantom Plecos are generally peaceful towards other species, we strongly suggest providing plenty of caves or rock work to help them establish their own territory, as they can be protective of their favourite hiding spots. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH of 6.0–7.0 and thrive in temperatures ranging from 25–30°C.

Avoid overly aggressive tank mates or other large, territorial bottom-dwellers unless the tank is spacious enough for everyone to have a home. Blue Phantom Plecos are primarily foragers that scavenge along the substrate and hardscape; try feeding a variety of sinking wafers and pellets. Their favourite meals include algae wafers, sinking carnivore pellets, and fresh blanched vegetables like zucchini or cucumber to ensure they receive a balanced diet.

Quick Care Tips

  • Social: Peaceful with mid-water fish, but can be territorial towards other plecos or similar bottom-dwellers. Ensure enough caves for everyone.
  • Plants: Their size means they might accidentally uproot delicate foreground species. They love resting under large leaves like Amazon Swords.
  • Diet: They need a mix of algae-based foods and high-quality sinking proteins to maintain their deep blue colouration.
