The Black Moor Goldfish (Carassius auratus) is one of the most iconic fancy goldfish, easily recognised by its velvety, coal-black scales and prominent “telescope” eyes. They have a rounded, egg-shaped body and flowing double fins. Originally bred in China, these goldfish reach an adult size of 15–20 cm.

Provide plenty of filtration and water volume; we strongly suggest a tank of at least 75–100 litres for a single fish, adding more space for each additional companion. They are social creatures that thrive with other slow-moving fancy varieties, like Orandas or Fantails. They prefer cool to temperate water with a pH of 7.0–8.0 and are quite forgiving of water hardness, provided the environment is kept clean.

Avoid any sharp decorations, jagged rocks, or aggressive tank mates that could damage their delicate, protruding eyes. Also avoid any tank mates small enough to fit in their mouth. Since they are slow swimmers with limited peripheral vision, try feeding sinking pellets so they can easily forage along the bottom without gulping excess air at the surface. Their favourite meals include high-quality goldfish sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, and blanched greens like de-shelled peas or spinach.

Quick Care Tips

  • Social: Keep with other fancy goldfish varieties, not with fast-moving “common” goldfish or fin-nippers. They cannot compete for food or defend themselves easily.
  • Plants: Goldfish are foragers and may eat soft-leaved plants. Opt for hardy species like Anubias or Java Fern attached to smooth rocks or driftwood.
  • Diet: Feed a balanced diet with plenty of fibre. Sinking foods are essential to prevent swim bladder issues, supplemented with fresh or frozen proteins.
