The Pygmy Corydora ( Corydoras pygmaeus) is a charming little addition to your tank. Unlike most species of Cory that stay down on the substrate, this tiny species is famous for its unique behavior of “free-swimming” in the middle of the water column. Reaching a maximum size of just 3 cm they feature a sleek, silver body with a bold black horizontal stripe running from snout to tail. Native to the Madeira River basin in Brazil, these nano-catfish bring a delightful sense of movement and “busy-ness” to any small-scale aquarium.

While the standard rule for schooling fish is six, we strongly suggest a group of 10–15 Pygmy Corydoras catfish. They are much more confident and active when kept in a large shoal. In smaller numbers, they may hide and lose their characteristic mid-water playfulness. They are quite adaptable but prefer a pH of 6.5–7.5 and thrive in well-oxygenated water with a moderate flow.

Given their tiny size, they are the perfect companions for other nano-species like Rasboras and Neocaridina shrimp. Avoid any large or boisterous fish that might outcompete them for food. They love to sift through the bottom, so sandy substrate is a must to protect their delicate barbels. Their favorite meals include baby brine shrimp, high-quality micro-pellets, and finely crushed flakes.

Quick Care Tips

  • Social: Keep Pygmy Corys in groups of ten or more. Unlike most Corydoras, Pygmies spend much of their time swimming in the mid-water and feel far more confident in a larger shoal.
  • Substrate: A soft sand substrate is essential. Avoid rough gravel, as it can damage their delicate barbels (whiskers) while they forage along the bottom.
  • Diet: Due to their tiny mouths, provide small sinking foods, baby brine shrimp, and micro-pellets. They prefer these over large wafers, which can be difficult for them to consume.
