The Blue Turquoise Discus ( Symphysodon aequifasciatus) is known for its majestic, disc-shaped body and stunning striations of neon turquoise over a deep reddish-brown base. Originating from the slow-moving, warm tributaries of the Amazon River, they are highly intelligent and social fish that often recognize their keepers.
While small schooling fish should be kept in groups of at least six, Discus have a strict social hierarchy. We strongly suggest keeping a group of at least 6 individuals in a large tank (255L or more) to distribute natural aggression so they feel secure and stress free. Good water quality is non-negotiable.They require very warm, pristine water with a temperature between 28°C–30°C and a stable pH between 6.0–7.0. They are sensitive to nitrates, frequent water changes are essential to keep their colors vibrant and their immune systems strong.
Avoid housing them with hyperactive tank mates or aggressive feeders that might stress them out or outcompete them for food. Since they are deliberate eaters that prefer to graze, try feeding high-protein meals multiple times a day to support their growth and vibrant colors. Their favorite meals include frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and specialized beef heart mixes, which provide the essential nutrients needed to maintain their spectacular turquoise patterns.
