The Anubias “Nana” (Anubias barteri var. nana) is a “low-maintenance” plant, withits thick, leathery, dark green leaves. Reaching a compact height of 5–10 cm, this dwarf variety is a staple in the hobby for its nearly indestructible nature and its ability to thrive in shaded areas where other plants might fail. Originally from the shaded riverbanks of West Africa, it adds a timeless, lush feel to the foreground and midground of any freshwater setup.

Avoid burying them in the substrate. We strongly suggest attaching the plant to driftwood, rocks, or ornaments with fishing line or plant-safe glue so the rhizome remains exposed to the water column, preventing rot and allowing the plant to breathe freely. It is a very slow grower that is remarkably tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, comfortably handling a pH of 6.0–7.5 and requiring very little in the way of high-intensity lighting or CO2.

Avoid placing Anubias “Nana” under direct, bright light for extended periods, as its slow growth makes it susceptible to green spot algae on its broad leaves. Since it absorbs nutrients directly through its roots and foliage from the water, try regularly dosing a liquid fertilizer to maintain its deep green luster.

Quick Care Tips

  • Substrate & Nutrition: Anubias “Nana” features a rhizome from which both leaves and roots grow. It should never be buried in the substrate, this will rot and lead to the plant’s eventual death. It is a water column feeder, absorbing nutrients through its leaves and roots, so liquid fertilizers essential for its health.
  • Placement & Lighting: This plant is incredibly hardy and thrives in shaded areas. Attach it to driftwood, or other hardscape elements using plant glue or fishing line. Because of its slow growth and broad leaves, it is prone to spot algae if placed under direct, intense lighting.
  • Propagation & Pruning: Use a sharp pair of scissors to cut the rhizome into smaller sections, ensuring each piece has at least three or four healthy leaves. It requires virtually no pruning other than the occasional removal of old, yellowing, or algae-covered leaves at the base of the rhizome
