The Black Medaka Ricefish (Oryzias latipes) is the dark counterpart to the popular Platinum variety. This selectively bred morph features a deep, charcoal-to-velvet black body that provides a stunning contrast to the green of your planted aquarium.
They are just as comfortable in an unheated indoor aquarium as they are in an outdoor patio pond. While they can be kept in smaller groups, we recommend a school of 8 to 12 to see their best social dynamics.
They are exceptionally adaptable to water parameters, thriving in a pH range of 7.0–8.5 and a wide range of water hardness. As surface-oriented fish, they spend most of their time patrolling the top layer of the tank, making them great for the upper water column. To keep their deep black coloration intense, provide them with a high-quality diet of small floating pellets, crushed flakes, and protein-rich treats like baby brine shrimp or daphnia. For breeders, the Black Medaka is just as prolific as its cousins, making it a rewarding choice for those who want to experience the “egg-hanging” breeding cycle of the Oryzias family.
