The Clown Pleco (Panaqolus maccus) is distinguished by its pattern of alternating golden-yellow and deep chocolate brown bands. Growing to only 8–10 cm , these “dwarf” plecos are the perfect choice for aquarists who want the personality of a South American catfish, but small enough for an average tank. Originally found in the wood-choked river systems of Venezuela and Colombia, they are peaceful and nocturnal.
They must have access to natural wood, provide multiple pieces of driftwood for them to rasp on. This wood is not just for hiding, it is a critical part of their digestive process. They are handle a pH range of 6.5–7.5, thriving best in well-filtered water with plenty of shaded nooks and crannies where they can spend their daylight hours.
Avoid housing them with overly aggressive bottom-dwellers that might compete for their favorite cave, though they get along famously with mid-water schooling fish. Since they are wood-eaters and scavengers, try feeding sinking algae wafers and wood-based pellets that reach the substrate quickly.
