The Cobalt Blue Half-moon Betta Fish (Betta splendens) is distinguished by its deep blue colouration and an expansive tail that fans out to a full 180 degrees. Reaching an adult size of 6–7 cm,  Originally from the shallow, warm waters of Southeast Asia, they bring an azure pop of colour to the mid-to-upper levels of the aquarium.

The Cobalt Blue Half-moon Betta Fish are best kept alone, but we strongly suggest a tank of at least 20 litres with a low-flow filter to protect their delicate, heavy fins. While they are often sold in small bowls, they actually need a heated and filtered environment to maintain their vibrant health and active personality. They are remarkably hardy and handle a pH range of 6.5–7.5, but they truly thrive in warm, stable conditions.

Avoid housing your cobalt blue half-moon betta fish any tank mates with long fins or “nippy” tendencies which may damage the Betta’s spectacular tail. Since they are surface-oriented insectivores with a labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe air, feed floating pellets that won’t sink too quickly. Their favourite meals include frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.

Quick Care Tips

  • Social: Males are territorial and must be kept alone to prevent fighting. They can sometimes live with peaceful, short-finned companions.
  • Plants: Bettas like to rest near the surface. Broad-leaved plants like Anubias or Amazon Swords provide the perfect “hammock” for them.
  • Diet: Provide your betta pellets supplemented with frozen or live treats like bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp to maintain their vibrant colours.
