The Black Venezuelan Cory (Corydoras schultzei) is one of the most striking bottom-dwellers in the hobby, featuring a rich chocolate to jet-black colouration that looks absolutely stunning against white sand or bright green plants. These are not cheap corydoras for a reason: C. schultzei lay fewer eggs than most species, hatch rates are lower, and raising the fry demands more care, which is reflected in the rarity and quality of well-bred specimens.
Keep a group of at least six black venezuelan corys, but 8–12 is where they really shine, snuffling through the substrate in tight, confident formation as nature intended. They genuinely prefer a lower pH, around 6.5 is ideal, and are more sensitive to nitrates than most corys, so consistent water changes and a smooth, fine sandy substrate to protect their delicate barbels are non-negotiable.
These are hardy, sociable tank mates for other peaceful shoaling fish and will comfortably share space with other cory catfish species, though they will not interbreed. Feed high-quality sinking wafers, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and live blackworms, foods that actually reach the bottom before the mid-water fish get there first. The black venezuelan cory is a genuine collector’s cory.
