The Zebra x Silver Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) is a majestic and highly recognizable variety, blending the classic, shimmering iridescent scales of the Silver Angel with the bold, dark vertical bars of the Zebra morph. These elegant cichlids feature a laterally compressed, disc-shaped body and can reach a vertical height of nearly 20 cm, including their flowing fins. Originating from the river basins of South America, they are the undisputed “kings” of the community tank, bringing a graceful, vertical presence to the aquarium landscape.

Provide a tall aquarium for your Zebra x Silver Angelfish to accommodate their long fins; we strongly suggest a tank of at least 115–150 litres for a single pair. While they are relatively peaceful when young, they are cichlids by nature and can become territorial, especially during spawning. They thrive in warm, slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH of 6.5–7.5, and they greatly appreciate a stable environment with plenty of vertical structures like tall plants or driftwood.

Avoid housing Zebra x Silver Angelfish with fin-nippers like Tiger Barbs, or very small “nano” fish that may eventually be viewed as prey as the Angelfish matures. Since they are mid-water feeders that are quite observant during mealtime, try feeding high-quality flakes or slow-sinking granules. Their favourite meals include frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and tubifex, which help support their growth and maintain the sharp contrast of their zebra-like striping.

Quick Care Tips

  • Social: They do best in pairs or small groups in larger tanks. Be mindful of territory during breeding, as they will fiercely guard their chosen spot.
  • Plants: They love heavily planted tanks with broad leaves like Amazon Swords, which they use for both cover and as potential spawning sites.
  • Diet: A high-protein diet is needed for fin development. Supplement a staple flake or pellet with varied frozen or live foods to keep them in peak condition.
