Rotala macrandra is the plant that serious aquascapers talk about in hushed, slightly reverent tones, and once you’ve seen its wavy, crimson leaves glowing under strong light against a bed of green moss, you’ll understand why. Growing 20–40 cm tall, it makes an unforgettable background centrepiece, but it demands serious commitment in return. Native to the soft, acidic rivers of India, this is not a beginner plant.
Strong lighting is non-negotiable for maintaining those deep red hues, and CO2 injection is essentially a requirement, without it, the plant tends to melt, drop leaves, and become a genuinely frustrating experience. It thrives at a pH of 5.5–7.0 in soft to moderately hard water and must be introduced to a stable, well-established aquarium where parameters don’t swing. Any sudden chemistry change will show on the leaves first.
Give the stems room, crowded lower leaves without adequate flow and light will deteriorate fast. Feed it well with an iron-rich liquid fertiliser and a quality nutrient substrate, and it will reward you with some of the most spectacular colour in the planted tank hobby. Best suited to high-tech setups, challenging, but absolutely worth it for those who are ready.
