The Kuhli Loach (Pangio kuhlii) brings a sense of whimsy to the bottom of the tank. Featuring a slender, eel-like body decorated with bold, alternating bands of dark chocolate and golden-yellow, these loaches are a favorite for nano fish tanks and community setups. Growing up to 10 cm in length, they are master scavengers that spend their time weaving through plants and sifting through sand for leftover food.

Kuhli Loaches are primarily nocturnal and have a wonderfully quirky personality. While they can be shy, they are incredibly social with their own kind. It is best to keep the Kuhli Loach in groups of 6 or more. When they feel secure in a group, you will often find them “cuddled” together in a single cave or under a piece of driftwood.

Known to be peaceful scavengers and exceptionally gentle. Their most important requirement is a soft sand substrate, as they love to sift through the ground for food and may even bury themselves completely with only their little barbels poking out. They thrive in a pH of 6.0–7.0 and warm  water temperatures. To keep them healthy, provide a varied diet of sinking catfish pellets, frozen bloodworms, and tubifex worms, which they will happily hunt for during the evening hours.

Quick Care Tips

  • Social: Keep in groups of six or more. Kuhli Loaches are highly social and are known to be quite reclusive if kept solitary. In larger groups, they feel much safer and are far more likely to venture out into the open.
  • Substrate: A soft sand or very smooth, fine gravel substrate is essential. They love to sift through the ground and may even bury themselves completely; rough gravel can cause serious damage to their delicate underbellies and barbels.
  • Diet: Feed a variety of sinking catfish wafers, frozen bloodworms, and brine shrimp. As they are primarily nocturnal scavengers, it is best to offer food just before the aquarium lights are turned off for the night.
