The Mediterranean Fern (Asplenium normale) is a delicate semi-aquatic paludarium fern characterised by its intricate, feathery fronds, it mimics the lush , overgrown banks of a tropical stream. is an excellent, highly adaptable plant for paludariums, capable of growing both fully submerged in water and emersed (out of water) in high-humidity environments. It is a rare, versatile fern that can transition between aquarium and terrarium sections, often displaying a “mossy” or delicate appearance.
It prefers dampened, well-draining substrates or can even be tucked into crevices on a hygroscopic background. Because it is naturally adapted to the dappled light of forest canopies, it performs beautifully under standard LED terrarium lighting without the risk of leaf scorch.
Beyond its visual appeal, this fern is highly functional within a closed ecosystem. Its fronds provide essential cover and humidity-rich hiding spots for small amphibians or invertebrates. It is a slow-to-moderate grower, ensuring it won’t quickly overwhelm its neighbours, which allows for a stable and low-maintenance aqua-terrarium display that remains pristine over time.
