Pearl weed (Hemianthus glomeratus) is a stem plant that has become a staple for aquascapers looking to create lush, bushy landscapes. Depending on how you prune it, this plant can grow as a low-creeping carpet, a dense midground cluster, or a tall background screen reaching over 20 cm. Native to the wetlands of Florida, its small, delicate leaves and rapid growth rate make it one of the best choices for adding a sense of scale and vibrant energy to nano fish tanks.

Provide plenty of light, but we strongly suggest frequent trimming if you want to maintain a specific shape or “bush” effect. It is quite adaptable to various water parameters, handling a pH range of 6.0–7.5, and while it doesn’t strictly require CO2, it will grow significantly faster and thicker with supplementation. Because it is such an efficient nutrient-sponge, it is a fantastic natural filter that helps keep nitrate levels in check.

Avoid letting the top of the plant grow too thick and shaded, this can cause the lower stems to lose their leaves and become “leggy.” Since it is a stem plant that feeds through both its roots and the water column, it benefits from a combination of liquid fertilizers and a quality substrate. Its top role in the tank is as a fry sanctuary, where its dense, tangled stems provide the perfect hiding spots for baby shrimp and fish to forage safely.

Quick Care Tips

  • Substrate & Nutrition: While Pearlweed can grow as a floating plant, it thrives best when planted in a fine, nutrient-rich substrate. It is a fast grower that appreciates regular liquid fertiliser to maintain its bright green colour.
  • Placement & Lighting: This plant is incredibly versatile. Under high light and frequent trimming, it grows low and carpet-like; under moderate light, it grows vertically and works perfectly as a midground or background filler.
  • Propagation & Pruning: Pearlweed is exceptionally easy to propagate. Simply snip the top of a healthy stem and push it back into the substrate. Because it grows so quickly, frequent pruning is required to maintain the desired shape and prevent the lower sections from shading out.
